Lunch & Learn: The Humor Intervention in Psychotherapy

Wednesday, May 22, 2024 | Program: 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. CT

This program will be held virtually via Zoom. Details with instruction on how to view the webinar will be sent to all registrants the day before the program (5/21).

This program qualifies for 1.0 continuing education credits. Attendees must attend entire session to gain credit. Registration fee includes access to live webinar, program agenda, program PowerPoint, and continuing education certificate.

About the Program:

In our work as therapists, counselors, and other service providers, many of us have heard the advice "be careful with humor." However, there is little guidance, or research, about humor and its use in sessions. This presentation explores humor, the history of humor, the research about humor, ways humor fits into different theories of psychotherapy, and how humor can be successfully and wisely used as intervention in session.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the three primary uses of humor within the psychotherapy session.
  2. Increase recognition of moments during which humor is and is not appropriate and useful in session.
  3. Analyze and review the data related to humor and its use in psychotherapy.
  4. Explore the link between humor and laughter, our brains, and managing our body's state of arousal.

About the Presenter:
Glenn Maloney, M.S.W., LICSW, LADC is a psychotherapist and instructor at the College of Saint Scholastica as well as a clinical consultant for Genesis Recovery Services. Glenn engages in adjunct teaching as well, with past classes taught including general psych, drug use, and abuse, intro to social work, and assessment of substance use disorders.
