First Friday Forum: The Business of Psychology Practice

This program will be held virtually via Zoom. Details with instruction on how to view the webinar will be sent to all registrants the day before the program (10/5).

Program: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. This session is at the intermediate level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

About the Program:

This continuing education session will be delivered by senior staff of the American Psychological Association Practice Directorate. They will provide psychologists with updated information on strategic issues impacting the profession of psychology. They will focus on the business of practice, highlighting the strategic direction that healthcare and the psychology profession are moving into the future. There will be updates on independent practice and business operations, licensure and regulations, and healthcare financing. There will be a significant focus on how attendees can implement this information in their practices, communities, and state. This session will be based on updated research, legal/regulatory decisions at the federal and state level, EDI considerations, and guidance regarding ethics and human rights.

This program qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. Attendees must attend entire session to gain credit.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe emerging business models and operations for independent practice.
  2. Identify emerging regulatory and licensure changes and impact on the psychology profession.
  3. Recognize the impact of recent societal and health trends on the current and future psychology workforce. 4. Identify current trends in health care and psychology, including digital technologies and emerging business models.

About the Presenters:
Jared L Skillings, Ph.D., ABPP, LP, completed his Ph.D., in clinical psychology at the University of Toledo, with an internship in health psychology at the University of Miami (Florida) Medical School/Jackson Memorial Health System. He was appointed chief of professional practice for the American Psychological Association in July 2018. In this role he leads the association’s efforts to promote the practice of psychology and advocates for practicing psychologists through federal and state legislative advocacy, legal and regulatory initiatives and public education. Prior to joining APA, Skillings’ professional career included leadership roles within large group practice settings and complex integrated health systems. Skillings served as chief of psychology at Spectrum Health System in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he led behavioral health strategy, program and talent development, clinical access, quality and safety, financial management, and system integration for this not-for-profit integrated healthcare organization. Under his leadership behavioral health growth rose from five to 57 providers (including 31 psychologists), and psychology integration with many medical services like cardiology, surgery, and primary care. Skillings facilitated full medical staff privileges for psychologists and physician status for employment contracting and benefits. In 2015 Skillings became the first early-career psychologist in the U.S. to be triple board-certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in clinical psychology, clinical health psychology and behavioral and cognitive psychology. He has served as chair or president of four independent psychology governance organizations, including 2018 president of the Michigan Psychological Association (MPA); 2017-18 chair of the ABPP Council of Presidents of Psychology Specialty Academies; 2017 chair of the APA’s Board of Professional Affairs (BPA); and 2016 president of the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology. Skillings is the author of peer-reviewed research articles on a range of topics including scope of practice, CBT in integrated care and trauma.

Stephen Gillaspy, Ph.D., LP, completed his Ph.D., in Clinical Psychology from Oklahoma State University. He is the Senior Director of Healthcare Finance, American Psychological Association. Gillaspy is a licensed pediatric psychologist, clinical scientist and senior administrator with extensive experience integrating psychological services into larger healthcare systems. Over the course of his career, he has worked at the national and state levels to advance behavioral health services. For example, Gillaspy has served as an APA advisor to the American Medical Association's Relative Value Update Committee (RUC), which is instrumental in setting reimbursement rates for psychological services. He also has worked with Oklahoma’s Medicaid agency to implement health & behavior codes for psychologists and develop policies on the reimbursement of clinical services provided by psychology interns and fellows. Gillaspy’ s clinical work has focused on the treatment of pediatric obesity, working with children and families to improve both their physical and behavioral health outcomes. Gillaspy was a professor and director of pediatric psychology in the department of pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine. He also worked as director of the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline. Gillaspy was president of the Oklahoma Psychological Association (OPA) in 2013 and chaired OPA’s Division for Research, Academics, and Training from 2009 to 2011. He has contributed to five book chapters and authored or co-authored 40 articles published in scientific journals.

Marnie Shanbhag, Ph.D., LP, completed her Ph.D., in Counseling Psychology from the University of Florida. She is the Senior Director of Independent Practice, American Psychological Association. Prior to beginning her practice, Dr. Shanbhag worked in academic and counseling settings including serving as the Executive Director of the Seminole Healthy Start Coalition, Inc. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Florida Psychological Association, and Leadership Seminole. She has served on several area boards including the March of Dimes and is a former President of the Central Chapter of the Florida Psychological Association. Marnie Shanbhag was a licensed psychologist in private practice in Winter Park, Florida. Dr. Shanbhag retired from private practice in February 2023. Dr. Shanbhag specialized in helping people develop healthy relationships and divides her time between counseling individuals and couples and providing coaching to employees of local companies.

Refund/Cancellation Policy: A 100% refund will be made if the event is cancelled. Refunds, less a $5 handling fee, will be given if a written cancellation is received at least two working days before the scheduled program begins. No refund or transfer is given the day of the program.
