About the Program

Transgender and intersex patients face widespread discrimination and barriers to health care. Providers often lack proficiency in transgender-friendly practices due to limited specialized training and lack of transgender-specific training curricula. In response to these gaps in training, and to increase understanding of this increasingly visible patient population, we developed a forum focused on promoting cultural competence in transgender and intersex health. This forum aims to increase provider knowledge of transgender and intersex health, their specific needs, information and best practices for transgender friendly services.

The interactive forum will provide participants with an overview of transgender and intersex health and the barriers that inform low healthcare utilization and health disparities in this community using slideshows, video and case studies demonstrating practical strategies toward transgender friendly practice. Participants will learn about current trends in language use (e.g., pronouns, gender-inclusive terminology) and how to best support gender diverse patients who are charged with navigating complex, and at times unfriendly, medical systems. Finally, the forum will include a question and answer session during which participants can critically reflect on their past experiences with transgender and intersex patients while brainstorming ways of developing affirming practices in their respective workplace settings.

This program is at the intermediate level and is designed for interdisciplinary audiences in areas of psychiatry, psychology, social work, endocrinology, family medicine, internal medicine, plastic surgery and pediatrics.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe gender identity development and differentiate components of gender and sexual identity from gender dysphoria;
  2. Describe trajectories of care among gender diverse individuals;
  3. Apply professional standards of care and guidelines to use when working with gender diverse individuals;
  4. Describe strategies to optimize care and prevent ethical and legal dilemmas that are common when working clinically with gender diverse individuals and their families.
