This program qualifies for 1.5 continuing education credits.

About the Program:

Most children show evidence of social stereotyping and prejudice well before they enter kindergarten. Importantly, these biases concerning race, gender, attractiveness, weight, etc. affect their cognitive, social, and emotional development, often in ways that serve to limit (rather than maximize) their potential. In this talk, Dr. Bigler will summarize findings from psychological science concerning the causes and consequences of children’s social stereotyping and prejudice, and provide concrete recommendations for how best to minimize and prevent such biases among youth.

Participants will be able to:

1. Define stereotyping and prejudice and describe at what age they emerge among children.
2. Identify the weakness of interventions aimed at reducing children's stereotyping and prejudice.
3. Identify three environmental factors that cause children to categorize others by attributes such as gender and race.
4. Recommend three strategies for preventing and reducing children's stereotyping and prejudice.
