Identity, Privilege, Bias: How Do I “Show Up” As a Clinician?

Friday, December 6, 2019

Registration: 8:30 - 9:00 a.m.
Program: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Friday Forums are cosponsored with the Metropolitan State University Psychology Department.

About the Program

The wealth of research on implicit bias confirms that healthcare professionals demonstrate biases around social identities, including race, class, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, nationality, etc. While many psychologists know they hold implicit biases, they don’t always do a good job of examining how these biases actually show up in their work with clients and with each other. This interactive session will explore what it means for a psychologist to bring a power and privilege lens to their work, why it is critically important to clients and colleagues that this lens is used, and how psychologists can hold themselves accountable for actively working against bias in all their interactions.

This session is at the introductory level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

This session qualifies for 3.0 continuing education credits. You must attend the full 3-hour program to get continuing education credit for the event.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of social identities in all aspects of one’s psychological practice.
  2. Recognize how implicit biases affect one’s clinical and professional interactions and how using a power and privilege lens can minimize bias.
  3. Apply a power and privilege lens to all aspects of one’s practice.
