New Member Spotlight: Dawn Nuss, MS

1)      What is your background in psychology (e.g., education)?

I started my education with a BS in Psychology and continued directly on from there to complete a teacher competency.  I gained licensures in Learning Disabilities and Emotional Behavioral disorders, finishing up with a MS in Special Education.  In 2005, I graduated with a MS in Counselor Education, completed 4,000 supervised hours, and currently I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor.

2)      Describe your current occupation and any involvement in the Minnesota Psychological Association if applicable.

I am currently working two days a week in a county jail setting as their Mental Health Professional.  I also have a private practice in Rochester.  At present, I am not directly involved with MPA but plan on becoming involved after I complete my Permanency and Adoption Competency Certificate in early June 2014.

3)      What inspired you to pursue a degree in psychology?

I have always had a passion for Psychology.  With young children at home, I found the teaching path appealing and taught for 17 years.  Ten years ago, I continued to pursue my dream of being a therapist.

4)      Why did you join the Minnesota Psychological Association?

I joined the MPA to stay in touch with changes, obtain new information, and learn about research in the field of Psychology.

5)      What do you hope to learn/gain from your new membership?

I am hoping to get involved in new programs and advancement of services for those who would like/need therapy.  I am particularly interested in adoption issues and assisting in the adoption process.

6)      Any outside hobbies/interests you do not mind sharing?

I have several hobbies: hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening.  I even raised chickens for the first time this past summer.  By far my most enjoyable and treasured time is with my three grandchildren.
