MPA's Rural Conference Goes National and Adds Group Webcast Sites, Requests Posters

October 11, 2013, will be the first day MPA presents a conference with national partners!  Advances in Rural Practice: The Fifth Annual Rural Behavioral Health Practice Conference, still has MPA’s Rural and Greater Minnesota (R&GM) Division as its principal partner.  Other partners are joining us this year:  The Committee on Rural Health of the American Psychological Association, the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education, the Illinois Psychological Association, and the University of Minnesota-Morris Psychology Discipline.

The other big enhancement for the 2013 conference is group webcast sites to facilitate interpersonal networking.  The conference will be available in-person to participants in Morris, MN, and to individuals in their homes or offices, as in previous years.  It will also be available to participants who gather for group webcasts, available in St. Cloud, Fargo, and northern and southern Illinois sites (and perhaps other sites TBA).

This year’s conference will feature a nationally renowned keynote speaker.  Dr. Ron Manderscheid of the National Association of Rural County Behavioral Health & Developmental Disability Directors will present on Extending National Healthcare Reform to Rural America:  A review of components of the Affordable Care Act.  In tune with the conference’s use of webcasting, he will be presenting from Washington, DC.

Other presentations will be critical to rural practitioners, as well as to metro practitioners who see clients referred from rural areas or who moved to cities from rural areas.  Paul Heyl of the  Minnesota Department of Human Services will present The Rural Illness Management and Recovery Model.  Dr. Willie Garrett, Chair of MPA’s Rural & Greater Minnesota Division, will inform us about Psychotherapy with Rural African Americans.  Dr. Daniel Burow of Deer Oaks Behavioral Health will presentTherapeutic Techniques for Rural Older Adults.

The conference committee is requesting poster presentation submissions on rural research.  Send title, authors/affiliations, and summary to [email protected].

The conference is chaired this year by Dr. Willie Garrett and Dr. Scott Palmer.  Committee members hail from four states.  Up to seven continuing education hours are available.  The Minnesota Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  The Minnesota Psychological Association maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
